Green-lidded bin deliveries for Better Recycling

"Better Recycling" is coming to West Suffolk in June 2026.

From Monday 23rd February, residents across West Suffolk will now begin receiving a standard 240 litre sized green-lidded recycling bin in preparation for the launch of the new service.

Around 80,000 bins need to be delivered to households across West Suffolk, therefore the deliveries are being done in three stages over the next few months and completed by a contractor, Kee. An estimated delivery schedule can be found below, but please note that this is subject to change and is intended as a guide.

The delivery of the food caddies will commence on Monday 9th March and will follow the same three stage approach as the recycling bins, however these will be delivered by West Suffolk Council waste operatives.

Those properties deemed to need an adapted service, like flats with communal bins or terraced housing without a front garden, will be provided with alternative bins which will be delivered to a different schedule but before the new scheme starts in June.

We are asking all residents to please store their bin safely, number or name their bin, and to not use it before the new service starts.

A detailed information pack and collection calendar will be sent to households in May with more guidance and advice. There is also an ongoing communications campaign utilising social media and out of home advertisement to raise awareness of the changes.

Kedington (and presumably Calford Green) will be in the first stage deliveries; estimated delivery dates Monday 23rd February to Friday 13th March 2026.

Public’s chance to ride on ADASTRA trial autonomous shuttle

Residents across Suffolk are being invited to see for themselves how self-driving shuttle technology could shape the future of local travel — and to have their say on how it should work for their communities.

Suffolk County Council is holding two events where the public can ride on the ADASTRA prototype, ask questions and share their views.

The council wants to understand not just whether autonomous shuttles are acceptable, but how they could best serve local needs as part of the wider transport system.

The events take place at:

  • Mildenhall Hub, Sheldrick Way, Mildenhall IP28 7JX
    9.30am–2pm, Saturday 7 February 2026
  • East Point Pavilion, Royal Plain, Lowestoft NR33 0AP
    10am–2pm, Saturday 28 February 2026

The council has been working with design experts Smart City Consultancy to assess the technical, operational, and regulatory requirements of incorporating autonomous shuttle services into a potential future network of mobility hubs across the county.

Shuttles could potentially link future residential developments with strategic bus routes, improve accessibility, and support sustainable transport especially in rural areas.

Shuttles could travel shorter routes to feed main bus and train service corridors where the frequency of buses and trains could be increased, and journey times can be shorter.

Councillor Chris Chambers, Suffolk County Council Cabinet member for Transport Strategy, said: “Autonomous vehicles are not trying to replace cars, they are a means to fix specific, expensive gaps in transportation.

“As a council we are committed to delivering a range of transport options to meet the changing needs of the county, which is why we are undertaking this study.

“We really want to hear what people think so I would urge people to come along, see the vehicles in action and take part in the survey.”

In May 2025, Suffolk County Council secured a £75,000 government grant through the Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) Pathfinder 1 programme, administered by the Innovation Funding Service.

The funding supports feasibility studies aligned with the government’s ambition to establish a £40 billion connected autonomous mobility sector by 2040. ADASTRAL is one of 14 initiatives selected nationally.

Working with partners Smart City Consultancy Limited and Ohmio UK, the council is delivering a £325,000 feasibility study exploring how autonomous shuttles could be used alongside other transport options.

This would be via mobility hubs — transport interchanges that bring together walking, wheeling, cycling, buses, trains and shared mobility such as e-scooters, e-bikes and car clubs, alongside private cars.

The ADASTRA prototype is an Ohmio Lift shuttle, built in New Zealand.

It is designed as a fully autonomous vehicle, with no steering wheel or driver’s seat. It can carry up to 14 passengers at speeds of up to 40mph; however, during the trial it is limited to eight seated passengers with a safety operator, travelling at up to 15mph.

The shuttle is operated by Smart City Consultancy and based at BT Adastra Park near Ipswich.

The project team has already showcased the shuttle to the public, business leaders and industry at EVEX 2025 and The Big Bus Show 2025.

To take part in the online survey go to the Suffolk County Council website.

Eat healthily, save money and reduce food waste

A message from West Suffolk Councillor Donna Higgins on 22nd January 2026.

I am writing to let you know of an exciting offer for 2026 designed to help our residents eat healthily, save money and reduce food waste – all at no cost to them.

West Suffolk Council and our leisure partners Abbeycroft, works together with other Suffolk councils, to deliver the Feel Good Suffolk service. This provides free support to residents to help them get more active, manage their weight or to stop smoking – you can find out more at https://feelgoodsuffolk.co.uk. After referral, residents receive personalised support from a Feel Good Suffolk Advisor, who helps them access different programmes, adopt healthy behaviours and stay motivated.

Do you find yourself struggling to decide what to eat for dinner each evening? Or do you find it hard to find healthy meals that work for you and your family?

You’re not alone – it’s a common problem that many people face.

Feel Good Suffolk has now partnered with FiveDinners.com an online meal planning service which is already working with NHS Trusts and a number of other district councils to support over 30,000 people.

It means that every household in West Suffolk can become a premium member of Five Dinners for 2026 at no cost to them. They won’t be asked for any bank details which means they won’t be charged for using the service.

Once registered, they will receive a meal plan every week, tailored to their needs and preferences. This can be personalised for low calories, child friendly, low cost, vegetarian, gluten-free, quick and easy, menopause friendly and more. Alongside the meal plan, members receive a shopping list for the week ahead Alongside the meal plan, members receive a shopping list for the week ahead, which automatically adjusts to the number of people they are cooking for.

The idea is that through meal planning, the service can help people manage a healthy weight with nutritious meals and portion control. That in turn can also help reduce household food waste and save households money. It also helps reduce the mental load of working out what to eat for dinner each evening.

Five Dinners has been created by celebrity TV chef Theo Michaels.

New small electrical recycling points

A message from West Suffolk Council:-

We are delighted to announce that to make recycling easier and more accessible, we have launched a new recycling initiative to encourage residents and visitors to recycle their small electricals.

There are 18 new small electrical recycling points across the district, installed at existing mini recycling centres in high footfall areas. Please see the list attached for the exact locations.

Residents can locate their nearest recycling point here.

The new collection points can be filled with small electricals including mobile phones, tablets, cables, kettles, toasters and kids toys, anything smaller than a standard sized microwave.

This exciting initiative aligns with West Suffolk Council’s ongoing commitment to environmental resilience and sustainable growth, whilst encouraging positive behavioural change.

This recycling initiative was funded by Material Focus, an independent not-for-profit organisation, who provided £34,822 to support this project.

The items placed in the bins will be collected by Wiser Recycling, with regular updates to West Suffolk Council to measure the impact and effectiveness of the new bins, and with the hope to secure additional funding to encourage a further roll out across the district.

A press release regarding this new initiative has been sent out, and will be followed by social media posts encouraging the community to make use of the collection points.

West Suffolk Council Financial Inclusion Service

A message from Cllr Donna Higgins on 14th October 2025.

Our aim is for a thriving West Suffolk for all of our residents.

We know that there are households both in West Suffolk and nationally who are simply surviving. They include residents who for whatever reason, haven’t come forward for the support they can access. It could be pride; it could be that they simply don’t realise that they could ask for support.

That is why West Suffolk Council has set up a Financial Inclusion Service so that, using data, we can target households who we believe may be eligible for support. That will include people who are retired, working and others who are looking to return to work. We can then help them check they are receiving support and to reduce their outgoings such as utility bills wherever possible.

Pension credits

Initially we are targeting households in West Suffolk who we believe may not be claiming their full Pension Credits. The Government estimates that nationally in 2023 £1.5 billion in pension credits went unclaimed. If they successfully apply, they may also be eligible for further help to boost their income.

We are writing to households we have identified.  We are also offering 1-1 support over a phone call. Alongside this, we will also be attending community groups, events and activities to promote the support that is available to residents. We have attached a leaflet that can be used to help promote the service locally.

Letters will shortly be arriving at the households in West Suffolk that we have identified as likely to be eligible for unclaimed pension credits. Households that haven’t received a letter can still enquire about Pension Credits at www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/cost-of-living or by phoning West Suffolk Council’s Financial Inclusion Service on 01284 757660.

More Suffolk homes eligible for energy improvements

More Suffolk households can access free home improvements to make them warmer, healthier and cheaper to run, thanks to Warm Homes Suffolk.

Residents and landlords of eligible properties can apply for energy efficient measures such as insulation, solar panels or heat pumps.

Average funding of £18,000 is available for homeowners, and £12,000 for landlords and their tenants.

Warm Homes Suffolk is administered by Suffolk County Council, and delivered by East Suffolk Council, on behalf of all councils in Suffolk. It has been funding home energy efficiency improvements for two years, with funding from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

To be eligible, both of these conditions must be met:

  • Homes must have an EPC rating of D, or below
  • Homes are not heated by mains gas

And then either of the following conditions:

  • Households have a combined pre-tax income of under £36,000 (this was previously £31,000)
  • Homes are in a certain postcode (a pre-qualified postcode checker has been launched), which includes parts of:
    • Beccles, Bungay, Bury St. Edmunds, Felixstowe, Great Cornard, Haverhill, Ipswich, Kessingland, Lowestoft, Mildenhall, Newmarket, Rushmere St Andrew, Saxmundham, Sudbury

Once these conditions have been approved, an assessment of your home will identify which measures are best suited to your property. These will then be installed by trusted contactors, for free.

Highways Emergency contacts.

It is important that any issue that is deemed to be dangerous to either private property, the highway or any of its users is telephoned through on 0345 606 6171 so that they can be immediately assessed and action taken quickly.

Any report logged via our reporting tool will generate a site visit from one of our Highways Assessment Officers. Although they do triage incoming reports, anything logged with them out of hours will not be picked up until the next working day – which as you will appreciate will lead to a delay in attendance. The Councillor Highways Support email address is also not monitored outside of office hours and should not be used for anything that is considered an emergency.

Could I also please ask that you encourage residents to supply any photographs they may have – particularly in cases of drainage or flooding problems – as in many cases, the flood water will have subsided by the time our Teams attend.

Please let me assure you that all reports are assessed and the sites visited – but it is vital that they are logged in the correct way so that we can respond in a timely manner – and so that these are assigned to the most appropriate team within Suffolk Highways:

  • 0345 606 6171. Any hazard/emergency. This number is available 24 hours a day.
  • http://highwaysreporting.suffolk.gov.uk ‘normal’ issues such as pothole, non-urgent blocked drains, general maintenance issues etc.
  • CouncillorHighwaysSupport@suffolkhighways.org – County Councillor use only, for complex or in depth issues and wider Parish concerns such as requests for traffic calming, speeding issues, improvement works etc.
